Gary Lucas

After playing a live soundtrack to the silent film Le Golem at l’Eglise St-Jean-Baptiste last year, this Captain Beefheart alumnus brought his guitar and myriad effects pedals back to Pop to perform Sounds of the Surreal and Monsters From the Id. The former is a program of three classic, silent surrealist shorts, the latter a montage of clips from Lucas’s favourite monster movies, with the sound up. The setting (the Portuguese Association) wasn’t nearly as majestic as last year’s, but Lucas created a magical atmosphere nonetheless, with both acoustic and ethereal electric soundscapes.
