Diplo gave the co-sign, and the Frightnrs delivered. The debut EP, Inna Lovers Quarrel, by the NYC-based quartet leverage some rocksteady vibes to easy skanking results. The band's mantra is "ride the rhythm," and they coolly boast about "romantic murderation." The six tracks on display reveal a healthy reverence to 1970s reggae, starting from the electro vibes of "Argumental" to a generally on-brand vocal styling on "Sharon."

The track "Make Up Your Mind" evokes a smoky dancehall mode, and "Which Way" and "Admiration" manage to ring true to their source material. The lead vocalist, Dan Klein, is a bit shaky at times, but the instrumentation and overall presentation hold up. Diplo was right to back these guys; the Frightnrs bring it on this debut EP. We await the full-length to see if they can be consistent.
