"Johnny Hallyday has left us," his wife Laeticia said in a statement on Wednesday (December 6). "I write these words without believing them. But yet, it's true. My man is no longer with us."
A statement from French President Emmanuel Macron's office described Hallyday as "a vibrant icon."
Hallyday was a beloved performer in his native France throughout his 50-year career, gaining a reputation early on as a "French Elvis" for his gravelly voice and cowboy attitude. To date, he has sold more than 100 million albums.
He was reportedly preparing a new album and stage tour at the time of his death.
Last month, Hallyday was rushed to a hospital emergency room, prompting an outpouring of support from fans on social media.
Now, in the wake of his passing, plenty more tributes are flooding in. See a selection of those below.
