First Rate People

'Everest' (album stream)

BY Matthew RitchiePublished Oct 29, 2013

Ontario songwriters Jon Lawless and Liam Sanagan have been performing together with their ever-expanding pop collective, First Rate People, since back in 2006. But after multiple lineup changes and an avalanche of singles, the band are ready to release their first-ever full-length. Everest won't hit shelves until November 5 through Bedroomer, but while you wait, stream the album in its entirety on Exclaim.ca.

On the band's debut, nouveau R&B and barebones rock'n'roll are channelled together to create an audio mashup that at times recalls late '90s big beat ("You Won't Get This Joke At All"), stripped-down disco ("Dark Age") and nocturnal folktronica (album closer "Roman Candles"), with a lot in between also coming into play. And expect everything from club-ready beats and wavvy synths to eccentric wordplay and some fetching male-female vocal interplay to make repeated appearances throughout.

Hear for yourself by streaming the 10-song effort in the player below. And if you like what you hear, catch the band at the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern on November 21 in Toronto for their official album release with Texas King, the Cautioneers and EV Ree Wuhn.

UPDATE: This stream was available for one week only and is no longer available.
