Ex Deo

Romulus

BY Denise FalzonPublished Jun 26, 2009

Although Ex Deo are essentially Quebec death metal prodigies Kataklysm, the Roman history concept, as well as the use of keyboards and samples, make the band unique. Spearheaded by Kataklysm front-man Maurizio Iacono, Ex Deo's debut, Romulus, consists of 11 tracks of powerful death metal but with Roman-themed lyrics and the sound of epic war as an undercurrent throughout. The album's title track sets the tone of the record with crushing guitar leads, thunderous drumming, symphonic intervals and Iacono's signature death growls. "Storm the Gates of Alesia" features a guest appearance by Behemoth's Nergal, which gives the tune a hint of demonic black metal. But Romulus also has its fair share of melody. "Legio XIII" is about the devastating Roman Legion that brought Caesar to power and contains a down-tempo groove and piercing guitar solo. The album's heaviest track is "Cruor Nostri Abbas," featuring Keep of Kalessin's Obsidian C., who leaves an imprint of extreme severity.
