Erosion's long-awaited debut, Maximum Suffering, features members of Baptists switching their musical roles, making Erosion a completely different-sounding band all together. Maximum Suffering is a stripped-down amalgamation of sludge metal and d-beat hardcore that very few can replicate.
It is great to hear vocalist Jamie Hooper on a new record. His vocals have changed from the high pitch shrill of 3 Inches of Blood, to a more gruff and demonic sound with Erosion. His vocals are impactful, but he lets the music breathe and give space for ideas to develop. With tracks like "Everything Is Fucked," "Human Error" and "We Have Failed Us," it's abundantly clear that this album is all about the inherent flaws of humankind.
Erosion's riffs are sinister, frenetic and surprisingly melodic. "Deep in Hell" and "Scorched Earth" recall everything from High on Fire to Thantifaxath. For a fairly straightforward record, there is enough variety in the riffs to keep the listener guessing.
