While that big-shot Rock and Roll Hall of Fame down south may get most of the world's attention, up here north of the border some Canadians have given us a new avenue to celebrate our homegrown musical heroes. It's called the Independent Music Hall of Fame, and like the name suggest, it's out to shine the spotlight on our country's more independently minded artists.
Each year, the Independent Music Hall of Fame will welcome two Canadian indie artists into its ranks, and this week the 2009 winners were announced: Moncton, NB's Eric's Trip and Toronto's Rheostatics.
Both bands were nominated by the public and then picked by a jury of seasoned music writers from across Canada. To be accepted into this hall of fame, the nominees must be Canadian, embody the spirit of independent music and have put an album out on an independent label.
Other bands that made the short list in the hall of fame's inaugural year included DOA, Joel Plaskett, NoMeansNo, Stompin' Tom Connors, the Evaporators, the Lowest of the Low and the Weakerthans. However, after some fierce debate Eric's Trip and Rheostatics came out on top.
In the coming weeks, the Independent Music Hall of Fame, which is presented by Zunior.com, will offer up some in depth features on both winners. You can stayed tuned for that, as well as check out excerpts about the winning bands, over at the hall of fame's website.
