Elsiane

Singer Elsieanne Caplette is not from Iceland. Her voice may tread all over Emiliana Torrini/Björk territory, but she and drummer Stephane Sotto came up with their nifty portmanteau in a similarly frosty place: Montreal. As it turns out, sub-zero temperatures cull icily detached performances. Admittedly, like fire in a vacuum, melodramatic quirk pop doesn't really work in an empty room and the Drake Underground was covered in tumbleweeds. For her part, Caplette displayed some out-there charisma and Sotto's crack drumming was admirable, but the tandem's ethereal tunes fell flat in the chilly space. On the plus side, Caplette is in the running for the best outfit of the festival.
