Elliott Brood

"Johnny Rooke"

It's called "death country," and any day now I expect it to be a hit with the kids. Soon there'll be stomach tattoos, Facebook groups, start-up teenage bands singing about swigging and gunning... Nah, who are we kidding here, Elliott Brood are a depressing bunch that drink away their troubles with a jug of unidentified whisky in one hand and a loaded shotgun in the other. This is adult music we're talking about! Taken from their 2005 album Ambassador, this is the tale of an "evil man" who's done plenty wrong. There's not much going on lyrically, but what Elliott Brood lack in words they make up for with a swinging mid-tempo sing along and some mighty strumming. I feel drunk already.
