Sadly, today (June 7) would have been the late Prince's 58th birthday. While the pop great passed away earlier in the spring, his musical legacy lives on. To celebrate, Swedish singer El Perro Del Mar (a.k.a. Sarah Assbring) has delivered a touching cover of the Purple One's "I Would Die 4 U."
El Perro Del Mar's cover veers off a bit from the flashy, synth-and-roll version that appeared on 1984's Purple Rain, with steady drum machine clacking here replaced by meditative tabla tapping. Assbring's vocals arrive a little softer, though she's still convincing when she delivers the tune's memorable opening line: "I'm not your lover, I'm not your friend / I am something that you'll never comprehend."
Perhaps something to make u happy instead of feeling sad, you can hear El Perro Del Mar's Prince tribute down below.
As previously reported, Tidal subscribers were gifted 15 albums through the streaming service today, in celebration of the life of Prince. His home state of Minnesota has also proclaimed June 7 to be known as "Prince Day" henceforward.
