Dum Dum Girls

Lee's Palace, Toronto ON June 17

Full of jangly melodies, all-hands harmonies and steely expressions, California foursome Dum Dum Girls need constituent parts to get their due. When their Lee's set kicked off with a muddy mix, they were in a wee bit of trouble. Thankfully, the sound issues abated by the end of a swaying take on "He Gets Me High." From there, the '60s girl pop, Joan Jett and Brit Invasion references -- writ loud and dressed in black evening wear -- came together splendidly. Highlights, "Bhang Bhang, I'm a Burnout," "Jail La La," and "Everybody's Out," profited from drummer Sandy Vu's epic thumping and singer/guitarist Dee Dee's incisive riffs, both of which downplayed the aforementioned 1960s leanings.
