The Drums Frontman Jonny Pierce Announces Solo Album, Shares New Single

The Drums earned heaps of attention with their excellent first two albums, most recently releasing the solid Portamento in 2011. It comes as some surprise, then, to learn that frontman Jonny Piece has now gone solo for a new album to be released in 2013.

The album currently doesn't have much in the way of confirmed details, but it was entirely written, recorded and produced by Pierce himself. Look for it to arrive sometime early next year.

The singer said in a statement, "Some might say it's strange for a man to bare his soul the way I do on this album but I wanted to do something that exposed me for who I am even more so than anything I have done with the Drums... I wanted to be as self-indulgent as possible with this album. This is pop done the way I think it should be done."

For a taste of what the album will sound like, watch a video for the new single, "I Didn't Realise," below. The song is a little more angular and chaotic than the Drums' peppy, guitar-driven numbers, as it boasts blippy synths and jumbled-up beats. Still, Pierce's melodic vocals mean that it's not too huge of a departure for the songwriter.

Stay tuned for album details to be confirmed in due course. The Drums have a couple of Florida shows coming up in December, so don't expect Pierce's solo album to mean the end of his main gig.
