Drive-By Truckers

"Pauline Hawkins"

Southern rock journeymen Drive-By Truckers are preparing to release their album English Oceans on March 4 through ATO Records, and the band have shared the cut "Pauline Hawkins."

The tune is a brawny heartland rock number that clocks in at more than six and half minutes and includes loud strumming, a stripped-down piano break and a noisily twangy outro solo. As previously revealed, it was inspired by author Willy Vlautin's new book, The Free.

The band's Patterson Hood told Rolling Stone that Pauline Hawkins is a character from the book. "She had lived a tough life and had a brutal job, which caused her to be somewhat closed down in her emotions," he said. "I finished the book on Saturday and wrote the song on Sunday."
