Drift

Memory Drawings

While I am a fan of strict, disciplined post-rock like Mono, my heart truly lies in bands like Do Make Say Think and their looser, slightly softer feel to the genre. And those who like Do Make Say Think will absolutely love this album. The Drift have crafted a beautiful, beguiling and downright incredible record of overlapping melody and emotion. The standout track is "Golden Sands,” which showcases how to do everything right. After seven minutes of cascading, echoed guitar and offbeat drums propelling your mind into imagination, the trumpet kicks in with a mighty flourish, leaving the bass to fill the empty space. It all then comes together again for a finale that is just sublime amidst the aural pyrotechnics. "Lands End,” which is also incredible, plays with the open space a bit more but this entire album is solid. Warm and gorgeous, with nary a note misused, the Drift live up to their name by pushing you further and further away until all you know is gone, and you couldn’t be happier.
