Dream Theater Return with New Album

Massachusetts prog-metal masters Dream Theater are ready to make their mind-bending return this fall with a new self-titled LP. It will be the group's 12th studio set, and it arrives September 24 through Roadrunner Records.

A press release notes that the LP was recorded at Glen Cove, NY's Cove City Sound Studios, with guitarist John Petrucci acting as producer. Richard Chycki (Aerosmith, Rush) engineered and mixed the LP.

The album is the first to be written and recorded with Mike Mangini, who replaced founding skinsman Mike Portnopy in 2010. Fittingly, Petrucci said that the lineup shift helped them rethink their strategy.

"I see every new album as an opportunity to start over," the six-stringer said in a statement. "To either build or improve upon a direction that has been evolving over time or to completely break new ground. This is the first self-titled album of our career and there is nothing I can think of that makes a statement of musical and creative identity stronger than that. We've fully explored all of the elements that make us unique, from the epic and intense to the atmospheric and cinematic."

A newly revealed vid also has Petrucci labelling the LP the band's "most cohesive and broadest expression of our different styles and our sound." You can see the band laying it down in the studio in the trailer down below.

While details are still pending, Dream Theater will be issued in standard and deluxe CD editions, on 180-gram double LP, as a limited-edition boxed set, and digitally. Pre-orders are expected to start in July.

Additionally, Dream Theater have tour plans in the works, with show specifics to be revealed at a later date.
