Zimbabwe: Live at Madison Square Garden

BY Claire Marie BlausteinPublished Apr 24, 2008

The roar of the crowd is a constant static on this new collection from Dispatch — not surprising, considering that they are a band that have inspired some of the largest crowds the music world has seen. They split in 2004 to a huge farewell but came back together for this benefit concert in 2007, filling up Madison Square Garden three nights in a row to raise money to fight "disease, devastation, and social injustice” in Zimbabwe. For any fan of the band, there’s simply no question of not getting this — a full-length concert DVD, matched with an audio CD of some of their favourite live performances and the ability to download all of the concert tracks. For those who aren’t die-hards already, the live experience of a band that bring together uniquely blended funky and rocking groove sounds with touches of folk, reggae and ska may bring you into the fold. There is some roughness to the performance, with tuning and solos — they’ve been apart for years, after all, and it shows — but this is a unique musical experience not to be missed.
