Devendra Banhart Signs to Nonesuch for New Album

BY Alex HudsonPublished Dec 3, 2012

Devendra Banhart has kept a fairly low profile since releasing the slightly forgettable What We Will Be through Warner/Reprise back in 2009. Soon, the freak-folk warbler will be back with a new album for a new record label.

Sometime in 2013, Banhart will release Mala through Nonesuch. This is the latest in a string of labels for the songwriter, who has also released albums for XL Recordings and Young God Records, among others.

Mala was produced by Banhart himself, along with bandmate Noah Georgeson, who also produced previous albums Cripple Crow (2005) and Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon (2007). Georgeson has additionally worked with Joanna Newsom, the Strokes and Robin Pecknold.

Below, watch a video of Banhart playing a couple of new songs at a concert earlier this year. One of the songs is a quirky, folksy love song, while the other finds the songwriter singing in Spanish.
