Devendra Banhart has announced Flying Wig, his first solo album in four years and the solo follow-up to 2019's Ma. It's arriving September 22 on Mexican Summer, and it was produced by art-rock virtuoso Cate Le Bon.
Alongside the album announcement, Banhart has also shared Flying Wig's lead single "Twin," which comes attached to a video directed by Matt Muir. The song finds Banhart moving somewhat into Le Bon's wheelhouse of organic, synth-led rock, with streaks of gothic '80s pop.
"She's the only person I wanted to make this record with," said Banhart of Le Bon. "We definitely wanted a new sound, electronic yet organic and warm… we wanted to draw out and emphasize the emotional aspect of a synthesizer." Banhart's most recent album, 2021's Refuge, was a collaboration with Noah Georgeson.
After the album's September release, Banhart will be heading out on a world tour, with stops in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.
