The story of how Demi Lovato and Schitt's Creek actress Emily Hampshire met is very meet-cute — and now we know the details. The pop singer invited Hampshire on their podcast, 4D with Demi Lovato, during which the actress revealed how the pair initially met.
Hampshire quickly revealed that Lovato slid into her DMs. "I did, I slid in those DMs," the "Dancing with the Devil" singer confirmed.
"You slid in my DMs and you said, 'Hey, I like you on the show. We should kick it some time,'" Hampshire recalled.
She continued: "And then you said, below it, 'And by kick it, I mean go on a date. I find you attractive.' You made it clear it was a date. And I loved that because sometimes that's confusing. I'm decades older than you, so 'kick it,' I was looking it up."
In their conversation, Lovato noted that Hampshire called out their 11 year age gap, with Hampshire adding that she didn't think they'd find the same things funny.
Lovato took their flirting a step further and compared their potential connection to the relationship between Sarah Paulson, 46, and Holland Taylor, 78. "And then right after you were like, 'I don't mean you're the Holland Taylor!'" Hampshire said. "I thought it was the funniest thing in the whole world because I was a Holland Taylor in that situation. Proud to be."
Lovato, who identifies as non-binary and came out earlier this year, laughed off the exchange. "A non-binary person can dream. And they, she — I was a 'she' at the time — she was dreaming big. I was like, 'What's the worst that could happen?' And I made a really good friend. You're a dope friend, and I'm happy we became friends," they said.
Hampshire agreed, adding, "Me too. I wish you weren't 29!"
Lovato admitted the comparison to Paulson and Taylor wasn't their smoothest move, but Hampshire found Lovato's attempt to salvage the situation to be very endearing.
"I think at that point I was sending you voice notes being like, 'No! That's not what I meant. I'm so sorry!'" Lovato recalled.
Time will tell if these two will get together in the future. At least we know they already have good banter down pat.
