Chicago trio Dehd released Flower of Devotion — one of the sharpest, most lovable indie rock albums in recent memory — back in 2020, and today they've announced its follow-up Blue Skies, their first for Fat Possum Records.
The album arrives May 27 and is being introduced today with new single "Bad Love," which comes attached to a punky video filled to the brim with leather and fishnet. In a statement about the song, bassist and vocalist Emily Kempf said:
"Bad Love" is about recovering from love addiction and making a decision to stop choosing and aligning with people who aren't your energetic match. I wrote it for myself and for everyone who needed to hear a song about choosing new forms of love. It's about chasing a relationship with oneself rather than an unhealthy one, one that just doesn't quite fit, or a codependent one.
Everyone experiences loneliness and everyone needs connection. I wished to reclaim loneliness for myself and others as something not embarrassing or to be a kept dark secret. I wanted to embrace loneliness and being alone, alchemizing it with friendship and behaviours with self that don't involve romance or sex.
The track has all the bouncy, rough-and-tumble energy of Dehd's best work, but it glitters with a subtle new sheen. Check it out below, plus the tracklist for Blue Skies and the band's upcoming tour dates.
