Like many before them β including PUP, SASAMI and Sparks β at the various points where touring has been (albeit shakily) possible as we enter our third pandemic year, Deerhoof have issued a plea for US politicians to model safer behaviour based on CDC recommendations.
"When the CDC strongly recommends masks indoors because of a worse new variant, and then every picture of US politicians in crowded rooms shows them without masks, it becomes very difficult to request masking at shows, and touring becomes less safe for everyone," the band tweeted yesterday (January 10), referring to highly contagious new COVID-19 variant, Omicron offshoot XBB.1.5.

you'd be surprised. our fans have been quite respectful of our mask requests! they don't want to see us getting sick and canceling shows. but politicians, and defeatist pronouncements from some members of the public, certainly do continue to make touring extra difficult.
