The Dears' Tour Bus Jacked But Tour Continues

BY Josiah HughesPublished May 1, 2009

In what is an all-too-common occurrence, Montreal indie romantics the Dears have been robbed on the eve of their six-week North American tour. While the band were sleeping in their hotel near Montreal on Wednesday night (April 29), some thieves broke into the band's Greyhound-sized tour bus and stole the entire bus, including it's trailer.

"We're kind of astonished that a whole bus can get stolen," front-man Murray Lightburn said in an interview with The National Post. "It's so Grand Theft Auto that it's almost surreal."

The great news, however, is that none of the band's gear had been loaded yet. So while they're short one rented tour bus, they have been able to rent a replacement vehicle and began their month-and-a-half trek across North America in Toronto last night (April 30). Had their gear been stolen, that would have been it. "If that happened to us, we'd be screwed completely. We'd definitely have to cancel the tour. It's like society has become morally bankrupt. People can't just go around taking other people's shit."

Lightburn goes on to explain that they were already a little iffy going on this trip. "This is just a really bizarre tour. First, it was called the Swine Flu Tour, now it's called the Bus Theft Tour. What next? The suspense is killing me."

Find out what happens next when the band visit a city near you in the next month.
