Daniel Lopatin Opens Up on His 'Uncut Gems' Soundtrack in New Documentary

Oneohtrix Point Never's Daniel Lopatin and Moog Music Inc. have released a new documentary about Josh and Benny Safdie's Uncut Gems soundtrack

The mini-doc titled Behind the Soundtrack: 'Uncut Gems' with Daniel Lopatin focuses on Lopatin's extensive use of the Moog One synthesizer to enhance the film's most dramatic scenes.

"It needs to be majestic," Lopatin says about preparing the score. "It needs to be rich. It needs to be new. It needs to feel like it can't be transient. It can't be small. So I was always really, really trying to find through that alchemical process what textures would emerge. You're just praying for those moments. And when they happen, you just hold onto them for dear life."

Lopatin continues, "I take crazy liberties with my own music to be really extreme and intense. But somehow I tend to enter into a collaboration a little shy, a little modest. I don't want to do too much. God forbid you do the most banal thing — that's really, truly embarrassing to me."

Uncut Gems: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack arrived in December through Warp Records.

Uncut Gems is scheduled for a short theatrical run in Canada over the next week. Find the full release schedule here
