Cuco

Despite his fun-loving demeanour, Cuco (Omar Banos) seemingly couldn't catch a break on Sunday afternoon. Rain fell throughout the 19-year-old L.A. songwriter's first Canadian performance, washing away the positive energy his laidback songs might have cultivated on a sunnier day. Rapper J-kwe$t livened things up with his commanding presence, but long pauses between songs further sapped the set's momentum.

Signs of Cuco's promise did break through the inclement weather, as he conveyed an emotional range that spanned from satisfaction to longing, all in a plainspoken singing style. The three-pronged rap and kaleidoscopic swirl of "Lucy," as well as the slyly fun "CR-V," finally got the crowd moving at the end of the set. Still, Cuco's first show north of the border wasn't the memorable trip it could have been.
