Al Spx is a woman of few words on stage, but when she performed on day two of Rifflandia accompanied only by her guitar she proved why she has gained overwhelming acclaim since the release of her album I Predict a Graceful Expulsion. Spx, known for her unique "doom soul" sound, sang songs from her debut album including "Blank Maps" and "Winter Solace" to a captivated crowd. She has toured off and on with a band and told the crowd at the Alix Goolden Performance Hall that doing a solo show allowed her to be in the moment without the obligation of a set list. Spx wrapped up the hour-long set with her version of the folk song "Old Stepstone." While other sets of the day were dominated by loud amped instruments, Spx proved that less can be more as she combined songs that included electric guitar and powerful a capella melodies.
