Clipping.'s Daveed Diggs Is Taking His Tony and Leaving 'Hamilton'

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jul 13, 2016

Daveed Diggs recently reignited Clipping. (f.k.a. clipping.) with a new EP titled Wriggle, but these days, the West Coast rapper is best known for his role in a little broadway show called Hamilton.

Turns out, though, historically minded hip-hop fans don't have much time left to catch Diggs in the revolutionary musical. The show's creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda announced this morning (July 13) that Diggs would be leaving his role as Maquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson.

Diggs's last performance will take place this Friday (July 15). He was the original performer to be cast in the roles of Lafayette and Jefferson, and the pair of positions marked Diggs's debut roles on Broadway. Last month, Diggs took home the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.

The characters have already been recast, with understudies Andrew Chappelle, Austin Smith and Seth Stewart stepping up to the spotlight.

Diggs has yet to formally announce what's up next for his career, but you can relive his performance in Clipping.'s recent "Wriggle" video below, as well as watching his record-breaking rap skills in a clip from The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

Miranda himself recently departed the original cast, giving his final performance as the titular Alexander Hamilton on July 9.
