Carolyn Mark

The Exclaim! Questionnaire

BY EXCLAIM EXCLAIMPublished Nov 17, 2016

Who are you?
My name is Carolyn Mark

What are you up to?
I am presently wintering in Victoria, celebrating the release of my new album, called Party Girl, and coming down off a Sudafed bender.

Hometown and current HQ:
The Last Resort, Ferwood, Victoria BC

Current fixations:
Yelling out "2000! We made it!" as often as possible. Neckbeard, Mexican cuisine, gardening and housework.

Mind altering work of art:
Pee Wee's Big Top

Most memorable/inspirational gig and why?
The Corn Sisters, Seattle, opening for Dan Bern. Neko gave me a corn-cob vibrator on stage.

Don't believe the hype:
The American Dream, the Swiffer

Your greatest strength/weakness:
I am perpetually followed by a vaguely digestive odour.

Your vital daily ritual:
Wake up, check for bruises, see how much money is left, get on the phone, return empties, meet with trainer, answer fan mail, mess with the servants' heads, polish silverware.

Guilty pleasure:
Watching someone erase a blackboard or sweep a floor.

If I wasn't playing music I would be…
"Employable"

Your most memorable day job:
Cocktail waitress at the seediest karaoke bar in town. (Eventually fired for not being "classy" enough. Ouch!)

Best/worst advice received:
I went to see Gordon Lightfoot with my mother. Gord prefaced his performance of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" with some brief yet confusing banter in which he said he got the idea for the song from watching the evening news, whereupon my mother poked me with her elbow and whispered, "Maybe you should watch more television."

I would drop everything to play a benefit for…
My mother.

What makes you want to take it off and get it on?
Sundown

What personal trait would make you kick someone out of your band and/or bed? And have you?
You should not be in bed with your band.

When I think of Canada I think:
Shania, Celine, Biff…

Music and sex: Is there a difference? Why?
I don't cry after every gig.

Strangest brush with celebrity:
I went onstage at a Pere Ubu concert to hug David Thomas and he said "Fuck off! Get the fuck off the stage! Fuck off!"

What does your mom wish you were doing instead?
She just wishes I wouldn't swear so much whenever I tell my "meeting David Thomas" story.

Carolyn Mark spent most of the '90s fronting the Vinaigrettes. Party Girl, her first solo album, features guests Greg Keelor, Don Kerr, Brian Connelly, Ford Pier, Ian Blurton, Ray Condo, Sarah Harmer, Oh Susanna and Elevator Through. She is also one half of the Corn Sisters with Neko Case; an album is due later this year. She is touring from Victoria to Winnipeg throughout April.
