Cancelled, the solo project of Greber/Fuck the Facts bassist Marc Bourgon, finds the Southern Ontarian delve into more experimental territory than the sludge and grind styles of his bands. New EP Tenebrific is truly a solitary endeavour, as Bourgon handled vocals, bass, programmed drums, synths and recording duties himself.
Although labelled an "experimental" project, the sound Bourgon has created also incorporates elements of industrial, doom and drone, making the three-song release difficult to categorize. Tenebrific starts with "Restitution," which features eerie electronic noise and a crushing rhythm, as well as a mix of abrasive and harmonic vocals. The slow, yet severe "Head Over" captivates with diverse emotive sounds, as spacey melodies and eclectic tones juxtapose the harshness of the dense, plodding drums and reverberating bass.
The EP builds upon the approach established by its predecessor, 2013's Threshold Adjustment, but it also features a darker, more aggressive atmosphere, highlighted particularly on the bleak and heavy "Social Impressment." The artwork, by Vedran Amidzic, complements the isolated vibe conveyed by the music, while mixing by the great Kurt Ballou (Converge) and mastering by Ryan Butler gives Tenebrific even more dimension.
