Toronto-based roots-blues-country trio the Breaks channel a stripped down, down-home style on their six-song EP, Rhythm and Roots. With Darcy Waffle on bass, Jeff Hughes on drums, Alex Beraldo on telecaster, banjo and harmonica, and special help from the Broadview Band on harmonies, the group sounds old-timey and fresh at the same time.
More impressive yet is that while these guys are clearly having fun and not taking themselves too seriously, they still manage to pull off moments of poignancy. It's not all about getting stoned and playing guitar or throwing day-old donuts at stuff. Fingers crossed their upcoming full-length showcases both sides evenly.
