Brassmunk

Dark Sunrise

With this EP release, Scarborough's Brassmunk have served notice that they are honing in on a style and sound of their own. MCs S-Roc, Clip and May One 9 have always had energetic deliveries and an instinctive urge to pass the mic at every opportunity, but there's a growth evident to this approach on this EP release. Instead of just coming with off the dome rhymes, the unorthodox mic rockers weave their different flows and lyrics to elevate their storytelling skills. On "Eldorado,” atop Agile’s quirky production and in between Ivana Santilli's slinky vocals, this means casting themselves as outlaws in a gold rush adventure. However, most of their concerns are more down to earth, as "Whistle While You Work” breaks down the tedium of their nine-to-five jobs, and on the bouncy "Oh Superman,” they stress their "regular cat” status. Underneath all of this, producer Agile has made some impressive leaps in his production style, as an intricate, soul-infused style is rapidly emerging and he provides a smooth yet rugged foundation for the MCs. An added bonus is the hidden track "Big,” produced by Attic of Da Grassroots, which combines what sounds like a horn blast and a trotting horse to make a ridiculously addictive representation of the organised confusion that is Brassmunk’s sound.
