While on the road supporting their Mercury Prize-nominated debut album Schlagenheim, buzzy British art-rockers black midi have officially shared a new tune. "7-eleven" has quietly emerged on Spotify.
The track has appeared in black midi's setlists as early as mid-2018, and was known to fans as "Cam's Song" or "A Song for Thinning Whistle (Truck)." While the song did not appear on Schlagenheim, a studio version of the track appeared at the end of a YouTube stream of the full album in September.
This marks the first standalone release of the song, along with the reveal of its official name.
"7-eleven" features a spoken-word performance by bassist Cameron Picton, telling the story of a blind man, a convenience store and a car crash, set to a creaky, banjo-driven instrumental track reminiscent of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Slint.
black midi perform at Lee's Palace in Toronto tonight and at Foufounes Electriques in Montreal tomorrow (November 9). Read Exclaim!'s cover story on the band, and listen to the track below.
