Black Kids

Partie Traumatic

The beast of hype rears its ugly head yet again. This Jacksonville, FL band decided in this web-savvy age to release a four-song EP, Wizard of Ahhhs, via their Myspace page and, lo and behold, a shit storm erupted on the blogosphere. All four songs snap, crackle and pop with youth, vigour and the catchiest hooks this side of, well, whatever place has the most fish. Singer Reggie Youngblood (yoinks!) and his band now have to add onto those four songs, all of which are included here, to show the world they have more innate life-changing pop in them. Well, they have some. The four songs from Ahhhs are still the best things here but "I’m Making Eyes On You” comes real close, with its synth-heavy ’80s sheen and guy-girl vocal interplay making this a slinky slice of fun. On the other side, the end of "I Wanna Be Your Limousine” just plain sucks. Enough said. But just skip to the absolutely perfect breathlessness of "I’ve Underestimated My Charm (Again)” or the no-better-pop-song-this-year-than "I'm Not Going To Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance.” Not perfect but once the mantle of over-hyped is lifted I’m sure we’ll find plenty of tricks to these Kids.
