Who are you?
Bill Elm, Friends of Dean Martinez
What are you up to?
We just released a new record, A Place in the Sun, and are headed out on an East Coast tour at the end of the month.
Hometown and current HQ:
Currently Austin, TX
Current fixations:
Watching my 14-month-old daughter Laurel.
Listening: Pink Floyd "Echoes" or Fiona Apple "Across the Universe" (I tend to fixate on a particular song and listen to it over and over).
Reading Wouldn't It Be Nice by Brian Wilson (for the third time).
Eating at Curra's Grill (a Mexican restaurant in Austin)
Mind altering work of art:
Kenny Burrell and Gil Evans, "Lotus Land"
Most memorable/inspirational gig? And why?
Jimmy Smith at the Mercury in Austin o it was amazing to see him in such an intimate setting.
What should everyone shut up about?
Hmmm¡K
Your greatest strength:
My family
Your vital daily ritual:
Spending as much time as possible with my daughter
Guilty pleasure:
The T.V. show Popular
If I wasn't playing music I would be¡K
Wanting to play music
Your most memorable day job:
A temp PA job spent trying to hire a flock of pigeons for an AT&T commercial.
Best/worst advice received:
"You don't really need an attorney to look over that contract, it's pretty standard." -from A&R person at Subpop
I would drop everything to play a benefit for¡K
Children or animals.
What makes you want to take it off and get it on?
The theme from Titanic
What personal trait would make you kick someone out of your band and/or bed? And have you?
Band: acting like a baby and yes I have.
When I think of Canada I think:
¡Kof the country that measures things all wrong.
Music and sex: Is there a difference? Why?
Yes, I have to do music with a couple of other guys.
Strangest brush with celebrity:
I was having a coke with Johnny Cash in his living room and he let me sit in his easy chair.
What does your mom wish you were doing instead?
Making money.
