James Krivchenia — drummer and producer for Big Thief — has released a new single, "The Science of Imaginary Solutions," ahead of his upcoming album Blood Karaoke, due out April 15 via Reading Group.
According to a press release, the album was "composed mostly from hundreds of tiny samples of unwatched YouTube videos found through random online generators… [and] mangled midi fed into Krivchenia's rig of synthesizers and pedals, and then meticulously layered and collaged."
Much like previous single "Emissaries of Creation," the newest track is a glitchy collage of samples and beats. Unlike that previous single, "The Science of Imaginary Solutions" sees interesting and promising bits of music flying by at breakneck speed without much holding them together.
When he's not focused on his solo work, Krivchenia has been keeping busy with Big Thief's output, including 2022 double-album Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You. That latest effort follows his contributions to 2019 releases Two Hands and U.F.O.F. and a pair of EPs in 2020 and 2021.
