What a surprise it was to walk into the Black Bull and be greeted by the sounds of authentic, masterfully performed soul/funk. Looking the part of a beat poet or trucker soul prophet, Ernie led his Big Babies through a set of impressive tunes, not so much memorable for the songs themselves, but for the performances of the players. Drawing reference from James Brown, Funkadelic and Stevie Wonder most obviously, Ernie and company pulled out song and set ending jam freak-outs, showcasing the incredible range and power of the vocalist, along with fantastic sax melodies and Zappa-esque guitar solos.
