Back in November 2007, I featured a selection of tracks from Beyond the Wizards Sleeve, a psychedelic project launched by superstar DJ Erol Alkan and the Grid's Richard Norris. Though it was originally intended to be a strictly anonymous method of re-editing old psych and Krautrock tunes, as well as remixing current artists, the vehicle has blown up into something, well, almost legit.
Following a number of unofficial twelve-inches, last year they released their first "full-length," Beyond The Wizards Sleeve Ark 1, a mind-bending reworking of forgotten/obscure/favourite tracks from the '60s and '70s. None of these have been given wide release, mostly seeing a limited life on white labels, but now the duo have officially put out their first accessible record, Beyond The Wizards Sleeve Re-Animations Vol. 1 (on New State Recordings), a comp featuring their remixes of Peter Bjorn & John, Goldfrapp, Midlake, the Chemical Brothers, Tracy Thorn, Franz Ferdinand and Late of the Pier, among others.
And if you're as attention deficit as I am, you'll enjoy this five-minute, 28-track "minimix" that Alkan and Norris recently threw together for BBC Radio 1's Annie Mac's Mash Up, which steamrolls its way across decades, genres and countries like a kid who never filled his Ritalin prescription.
