Ben Folds Five Plotting Reunion Album

Ben Folds Five already reconvened earlier this year for a handful of compilation tracks, so it's not too much of a surprise that the '90s piano-rock trio have a full-fledged reunion in the works. Folds has revealed that he is planning to team up with his old bandmates, drummer Darren Jessee and bassist Robert Sledge, for a recording session later this year.

Speaking with Spinner about the recently recorded new songs, Folds said, "We did the three things that we could do quickly for the record, and there were all these other ideas that I was bringing in that were really more radical. So I think in December we'll probably get together to do that as long as I have enough material when I come back in."

So exactly how did this reunion come into being? Well, it turns out that Sony Music asked them to record some songs for Folds's new retrospective set and everyone was open to the idea.

"We tend to do things when we're asked," the songwriter said. "It's really funny. We hadn't had any offers to do anything. I guess it's all self-motivation. We didn't know if we were going to get together or not for anything. I called Robert and Darren up -- they were free for a week, so we got the studio for the week."

Well if it's as easy as that -- will Ben Folds Five please bring a reunion tour to Canada?

Ben Folds's massive collection, The Best Imitation of Myself: A Retrospective is due out next month on October 11. See the details here. See a seven-minute trailer below and watch Ben swear in front of his kids.
