The latest offering from blackened death metallers Behemoth is a compilation collecting two of their EPs (2003's Conjuration and 2005's Slaves Shall Serve). Dubbed Abyssus Abyssum Invocat, this release features expanded repackaging, new artwork and liner notes from frontman Nergal, as well as completely remastered tracks and bonus material, including live songs and covers. The EPs themselves are nothing special, and if you want to check out some live Behemoth, you're better off picking up their latest DVD, Evangelia Heretika. What makes Abyssus Abyssum Invocat worthwhile are the covers. Hearing Behemoth's take on Nine Inch Nails' "Wish" and Danzig's "Until You Call on the Dark" is interesting, to say the least. Other than that, Abyssus Abyssum Invocat is rather underwhelming. However, it is something to tide fans over until Behemoth are able to work on their next album (Nergal is still recovering from his bout with Leukaemia). It also provides a nicely packaged version of the now out-of-print EPs, should you so wish to have them.
