Beefs 2010: Diplo Compares M.I.A.'s New Album to Skinny Puppy

BY Josiah HughesPublished Jun 10, 2010

With her new album // / Y / set to drop on July 13, M.I.A. is already facing a barrage of criticisms for her political beliefs and seemingly hypocritical lifestyle. Most recently, those came in her New York Times profile, which launched an ugly battle between the Sri Lankan celeb and Times journalist Lynn Hirschberg. Another key figure in the piece was M.I.A.'s ex-boyfriend and frequent producer Diplo, who revealed that the troublesome stories she's told about her upbringing might not be true.

Since then, Diplo has somewhat jumped on the anti-M.I.A. bandwagon. During the Times controversy, he tweeted (and has since removed) the sentence "tamil tigers burned my mums house down." While that was at least a topical jab, he's now turned his attention towards M.I.A.'s new album, writing today, "just listened to mastr of the MIA album.. WOW.. my 3 trax are slammin! dunno bout the rest - sounds like skinny puppy ☹ & gives me nightmares☹".

Skinny Puppy is a far cry from the "Gucci Mane meets Animal Collective" sound he originally promised, but we're hoping that our first time listening to // / Y / will be a better experience than Diplo's since we're not ex-lovers.

Thanks to Pitchfork for the heads-up.
