With their latest record, Exclaim! October 2014 cover stars the Barr Brothers paid great attention to incorporating a diversity of influences, all in a high degree of moderation. Speaking with Exclaim!, principal songwriter Brad Barr explained that the word "restraint" has been written into the band's blueprint from the start, forcing them to innovate and develop arrangements to set them apart from their Americana contemporaries.
We met up with the band at Cherry Cola's Rock N' Rolla Cabaret Lounge for a performance of "Even the Darkness Has Arms," taken from their recently released sophomore record, Sleeping Operator.
Starting with an intricate finger-picking pattern from Brad Barr and Sarah Page, the performance is held together by a steady rhythm section made up of a double bass and hand drumming on an instrument case. Soft three-part harmonies from the two brothers and Page add a welcome depth, giving way to a slick slide guitar solo.
