Victoria-based two-piece the Backhomes are set to unleash their latest LP Tidalwave next week, but Exclaim! is giving you an early listen to it in its entirety, right now.
Composed of Kees Dekker and Aimée van Drimmelen, the duo formed in Montreal but have been based out of Victoria for the last few years. The living room of their West Coast home has served as a studio for their previous releases, and Tidalwave continues the trend.
"Tidalwave is what you don't own, it's what you can't control," reads a statement from the band about the new record. "Making things naturally, making things by force, throwing them aside, dressing it up, tearing it down, calling it what it is. We are our own worst enemies, our own champions. If Only Friend was about change and leaving, Tidalwave is about what comes next. Ride the wave."
The home-recorded collection delivers nine new tracks that take the listener on a psychedelic sonic trip through fuzzed-out, synth-infused pop music. Drone-drenched, reverb-heavy tracks like openers "That's All" and "Solid Gold" mix with more organic-sounding tunes like the acoustic guitar-driven "Rays," before the whole thing wraps up with the warbling synths and exotic sounds of "Pre-Utopian."
Tidalwave will be self-released by the Backhomes on May 5, but you can scroll past the pair's upcoming live gigs to give it an early spin in the player below.
