Nearly five years on from the M A N I A of their seventh studio album, Fall Out Boy appear to be gearing up to reveal their eighth full-length.
A full-page ad spotted in yesterday's edition (November 28) of The Chicago Tribune features a wordmark which reads "FOB 8," leading fans to believe it could signal the imminent arrival of a Fall Out Boy album.
The stylized 'O' in the wordmark, which you can view below, seems to channel both a smiley face (but not that smiley face) and the taijitu, colloquially known as the "yinyang symbol."
Below the fold, the ad features the words, "If you build it, they will come," a misquote of line famously heard by Kevin Costner in the 1989 fantasy drama Field of Dreams. Notably, the film counts the Chicago Black Sox among its featured baseball legends.
To recap, the "FOB 8" wordmark appearing alongside a Field of Dreams quote on a full page of The Chicago Tribune makes for one heck of a midwest triple threat — one we'll be keeping a close eye on in hopes of new tunes arriving soon.
In September, Fall Out Boy guitarist-vocalist Joe Trohman released memoir None of This Rocks, writing in the book about how, post-M A N I A, the band were at work on more rock-oriented material that has since been set aside.
As he told Rolling Stone that month, "We were working on some stuff that was guitar-based. I don't know know what's happening with it. I think it unfortunately went to the back burner. It would be nice to make a record where the guitar is a little more upfront. We did start that way, as a guitar-based rock band, and it'd be cool to go back to those roots. We'd have to find a way to do it that doesn't sound like Fall Out Boy from 2005. It might be cool for somebody else to do that, but it wouldn't be cool for us to do it."
Last year, Fall Out Boy hit the road (and missed a couple of dates) on the "Hella Mega Tour" with Green Day and Weezer — a trek that did not come to Canada.
Read Exclaim!'s review of M A N I A. That album followed Fall Out Boy's 2015 outing American Beauty / American Psycho.
Following M A N I A, Fall Out Boy delivered three-track EP Lake Effect Kid, and looked back on their catalogue with a career-spanning vinyl box set and the second volume of their Greatest Hits.
