Apathy

Eastern Philosophy

BY Del F. CowiePublished Apr 1, 2006

Demigodz crew member Apathy’s work on the underground circuit paid off a while back when he landed a major label deal. This however is not that record. Apparently, Apathy wanted to clear out the vaults first, and judging from the evidence, this wasn’t such a bad idea. While no overarching theme presides over this collection apart from the East coast bias referred to in the album title, this is still a solid effort. Apathy’s rugged voice meshes well with the boom-bap and it’s from this vantage point he chooses to explore his versatility. The Connecticut-based MC prefers to critique things from the ground up and "All About Crime” is an early standout lucidly making the connection between blue and white collar offences. Apathy’s battle skills aren’t lacking, however, and he deploys them and his certified punch lines to effect throughout. This is especially evident when accompanied by other MCs as the posse cut "Can’t Leave Rap Alone” attests. His energetic delivery elevates the fact that many typical ingredients to a rap album are obviously present. While Apathy isn’t breaking the mould, his solid production, charisma and obvious skills — all showcased nicely here — should serve him well in his move to the major leagues.
