Our hearts have gone on, and not without reason: a feature-length documentary centring French-Canadian icon Céline Dion — fully backed by the singer herself — is in the works from Oscar-nominated director Irene Taylor [f.k.a. Brodsky] (The Final Inch, Hear and Now).
The yet-untitled film — produced by Sony Music Entertainment and Vermillion Films — promises to document Dion's unparalleled career that began when she burst onto the Quebec music scene at age 14. Her life story has yet to be fully explored onscreen, although her 2010 concert film Céline: Through the Eyes of the World chronicled a glimpse of the superstar's "Taking Chances" tour from 2008 to 2009.
In 2019, Dion also authorized the rights for some of her hits to Gaumont Studios' Aline — a biopic with French actress Valérie Lemercier tapped to portray her. It premiered at Cannes this year, billed as a fiction loosely inspired by Dion's life; now it sounds like we're getting the real deal.
"I've always been an open book with my fans, and with [Taylor's] sensitivity and thoughtful creativity, I think that Irene will be able to show everyone a part of me that they haven't seen before," Dion said in a statement. "I know she'll tell my story in the most honest and heartfelt way." Okay, we'll start stockpiling our tissues now.
Taylor added: "Going on this journey with a legendary artist such as Céline Dion is an extraordinary opportunity for me as a filmmaker. Having access to examine her life and inimitable career will allow me to create a multifaceted portrait of an iconic, global superstar — which I look forward to sharing with the world."
With Taylor's wings to fly, the CanCon great is about to finally be alive on the big screen.
Dion, a venerable fan of the Cure, is among Exclaim!'s list of the most conspicuous omissions from the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
