Amnesia Scanner Another Life
Published Sep 05, 2018Another Life begins with a scream, a distinctly synthetic shriek, calling out. It foreshadows the chaos and sonic artifice to follow on the album's turbulent, blissful journey through its cyber-grunge world.
Tension vis a vis our world's technological advancements is present even in the album's calmest, most structured moments, and at its most unhinged sounds like encrypted data come forth to signal the fragile, ignorant symbiosis we have developed with the electronic world. At times human voices return, both to warn of the mayhem surrounding them and as a reminder that this is not uncontrollable; we can harness what we create. Tracks like "AS Too Wrong" explode with distorted energy and voices structured into more accessible formats, creating a dissonance that feels appropriate with the album's themes.
Although Another Life may be borne from the unnerving question of whether the world will be saved or destroyed by technology, the music contained within is still hard-hitting, at times danceable, and infinitely entertaining. (Pan)
