As the hit-making songwriter and ringleader for Vancouver power pop favourites the New Pornographers, it came as a surprise when Carl Newman released The Slow Wonder, his debut solo record as AC Newman, in 2004. Did the singer really have that many amazing pop songs in him?
The answer is most certainly yes, as Newman will prove with another collection of songs due early next year. Hes currently working on the album - titled Get Guilty - at the Carriage House in Stamford, Connecticut, where the Pixies recorded Doolittle.
"Every time I make a record, I sit there thinking, 'It sounds too different,' and then the next day I think, 'it sounds the same as everything else,'" he told Spinner. "The next day, I'll go, 'It's perfect,' and the day after that I'll think, 'Its all wrong.' I just put my head down, try to work hard, hope for the best and hope that people buy it so I can continue doing this for a living."
While Newman finishes this solo album, his bread-winning project, the New Pornographers, are currently gearing up for the Stanley Park Singing Exhibition, taking place on Labour Day Weekend.
