The Polaris Music Prize has named the winner of its 2023 award for best Canadian album: GOOD LUCK by DEBBY FRIDAY.
GOOD LUCK beat out a short list of 10 nominated albums including a pair of Exclaim!'s best albums of 2022, Alvvays' Blue Rev and the Sadies' Colder Streams, plus Feist's Multitudes, Daniel Caesar's NEVER ENOUGH and Gayance's Mascarade — some of our best albums of 2023 so far. Aysanabee's Watin, Begonia's Powder Blue, Dan Mangan's Being Somewhere and recent Prism Prize winners Snotty Nose Rez Kids' I'M GOOD, HBU? also made the short list.
That list of 10 had been narrowed down from the long list of 40 by a Canada-wide jury of journalists and other industry professionals, with the final winner being chosen by a grand jury of 11.
The night featured performances from FRIDAY, the Sadies, Snotty Nose Rez Kids, Dan Mangan, Aysanabee, Begonia and Gayance. The event took place at Massey Hall in Toronto.
This is the 18th year of the Polaris Music Prize. Last year's award was won by Pierre Kwenders for his album José Louis and the Paradox of Love.
