Following a four-season run, acclaimed sci-fi drama Westworld has been cancelled by HBO.

Westworld — which starred Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Aaron Paul, Tessa Thompson, Luke Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins and more over its near-six-year run — had wrapped its fourth, now final season in August.

Speaking about the future of Westworld at New York Comic Con last month, series co-creator Jonathan Nolan shared [via Deadline], "We always planned for a fifth and final season. We are still in conversations with the network. We very much hope to make them."

Nolan's comments followed respective hopes from co-creator Lisa Joy, who shared with Deadline upon the end of Season 4 in August, "[Nolan] and I have always had an ending in mind that we hope to reach. We have not quite reached it yet."

"Over the past four seasons, Lisa and Jonah have taken viewers on a mind-bending odyssey, raising the bar at every step," HBO shared in a statement [via The Hollywood Reporter]. We are tremendously grateful to them, along with their immensely talented cast, producers and crew, and all of our partners at Kilter Films, Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television. It's been a thrill to join them on this journey."

A statement from Nolan and Joy's Kilter Films [via THR] reads, "Making Westworld has been one of the highlights of our careers. We are deeply grateful to our extraordinary cast and crew for creating these indelible characters and brilliant worlds. We've been privileged to tell these stories about the future of consciousness – both human and beyond — in the brief window of time before our AI overlords forbid us from doing so."

Based on Michael Crichton's 1973 film of the same name, Westworld saw its first two seasons take place inside the titular, technologically advanced Wild West-themed amusement park populated by lifelike android "hosts." In Seasons 3 and 4, the show explored similar themes in moving its characters to a futuristic society outside of the park.

Over its run, Westworld won nine Primetime Emmy Awards out of 54 nominations. In 2018, Newton's work on the show captured her the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

Nolan and Joy have developed a forthcoming show based on video game series Fallout, which began shooting in July.
