Despite a new George R. R. Martin TV project getting announced basically every other day, news that the Game of Thrones author's classic Sandkings is now heading to the small screen is exciting nonetheless — especially since it involves the original Utopia mastermind Dennis Kelly.

Today word has arrived that Kelly — who created the original cult UK TV series before Amazon Americanized it — will be taking on Martin's stellar 1979 novelette for a new Netflix project. Adding to that, Pirates of the Caribbean filmmaker Gore Verbinski is onboard to direct.

In fact, it was Verbinski who leaked news of the project in a new interview with Collider.

"One of the screenplays is based on a George R.R. Martin short story called Sandkings, which is this brilliant little twisted short story that I love," Verbinski revealed. "And I'm working with a great writer, Dennis Kelly, who wrote the original [Utopia]... The British original series is brilliant. And Dennis is doing the adaptation, so I'm kind of excited about that,

Beyond that, the director said little else about Netflix's Sandkings project, but it appears it will be a feature-length film. After all, making an entire multi-episode TV show out of the short story may be a bit of a stretch.

In efforts to not give any real spoilers, Sandkings tells the story of Simon Kress, a collector of dangerous and exotic animals who gets himself a terrarium filled with four colonies of creatures called sandkings. Soon, though, things take some seriously wild turns.

The upcoming Netflix project would mark the second time we've got a TV adaptation of Sandkings, as it was previously turned into the first episode of the Outer Limits reboot in the '90s starring Beau Bridges.

Sandkings adds to a long list of upcoming George R. R. Martin adaptation, including some Game of Thrones prequels. But like so many of them, it's unclear when Sandkings will actually arrive.
