Trans Rights Activists Call for 'Zoolander 2' Boycott

Last week, the first trailer for Zoolander sequel 2oolander showed up, and despite some iffy moments it also contained some decent jokes. One scene that didn't have many people laughing, however, was a cameo from Benedict Cumberbatch, who played a non-binary character known as All.

In the trailer, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson question Cumberbatch's gender, asking if he has a "hot dog or a bun." As the Guardian reports, the depiction has irked a group of trans rights activists. One of them, Sarah Rose, has since launched a petition calling for the film's boycott.

Rose claims that the filmmakers should've hired a trans or androgyne actor to portray the role of All in the film, saying, "By hiring a cis actor to play a non-binary individual in a clearly negative way, they film endorses harmful and dangerous perceptions of the queer community at large."

Further, she said, "Additionally, Cumberbatch's character is clearly portrayed as an over-the-top, cartoonish mockery of androgyne/trans/non-binary individuals."

She even went as far as comparing Cumberbatch's appearance to an extremely racist practice: "This is the modern equivalent of using blackface to represent a minority."

As of press time, the petition has raised approximately 10,000 signatures.
